Meet Claude Monet Renowned artist Claude Monet (1840–1926), a key initiator and leader of French Impressionism, was devoted to the pursuit and capture of light—or rather, its effects on sky, water, and land. His later works constituted an ongoing meditation on the garden he built at Giverny, France, particularly the large water garden. Characterised by flickering brushstrokes and indistinct forms, Monet's often enormous canvases of water lilies are perhaps his finest legacy.
