Meet Henri Matisse Renowned artist Henri Matisse (1869–1954) is largely credited, with Picasso and the Russian Constructivists, with leading modernism in the early years of the 20th century. His predilection for intense coloration divorced from the natural colour of his subjects brought the name fauve, or wild beast, to a group of painters known as Fauvists. Matisse painted domestic life with a joyful palette in his early years, moved through much bolder simplification of form as he matured, and the much larger scale that characterised his later years continued after ill-health prevented him painting and he produced abstracted shapes cut from coloured paper.
