Meet Henricus Hondius Dutch engraver, cartographer and publisher Henricus Hondius (1597-1651) was born to established map-maker Jodocus Hondius in Amsterdam, where he co-ran the family business following his father's passing. History first finds Henricus in 1623 when he published the fifth edition of the Mercator-Hondius atlas. World Map (1630) was originally designed as a frontispiece for Joan Blaeu's Novus Atlas; the largest and most expensive book printed in the seventeenth century, with 594 maps, over 3,000 pages of text, and published in Latin, French, Dutch, German and Spanish.
