This beautifully illustrated volume examines the links between the work of Cy Twombly and classical antiquity, published to accompany a major exhibition organised by the Getty Center and Museum of Fine Arts Boston. Having visited Italy as a young man, and later making his home in Rome, Twombly's work was fuelled by a passion for ancient culture, layered with references to mythology, archaeology, and poetry. Demonstrating this lifelong influence, Cy Twombly: Making Past Present draws together a selection of his paintings, sculptures, and drawings alongside several classical masterpieces, including a number from the artist's personal collection.

Meet Cy Twombly Unique among his peers at the vanguard of postwar American art, Cy Twombly (1928–2011) sought inspiration from ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian cultures. Throughout his career, he created thousands of paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs, and prints inspired by the cultures of the past he encountered through his travels, reading, and collecting. Twombly wanted to demonstrate that “Modern Art isn’t dislocated, but something with roots, tradition, and continuity. "For myself,” he wrote, “the past is the source (for all art is vitally contemporary).”
