Joan Didion: What She Means offers a chronological look at the writer's life and career, highlighting her fascination with the two US coasts she lived between and her singular voice as a pioneer of "New Journalism". The volume was published to accompany a major exhibition of the same name presented at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, which opened less than a year after her death in 2021, and features more than 200 works across all mediums by approximately 50 artists, including Brice Marden and Betye Saar, curated by Hilton Als.
