Study of Perspective Spoon - White House | Ai Weiwei

Regular price $25.00

The recent US mid-term elections were vividly referenced by great contemporary artist Ai Weiwei who posted the image of this 1995 work on Instagram, once again flipping the bird at the White House, which gives this re-imagined souvenir spoon utilising the same image a great shot of extra potency. Terrific gift for someone but only if you know their politics!

Meet Ai Weiwei Ai Weiwei’s Study of Perspective is a series of images shot around the world between 1995-2003, featuring the artist presenting his middle finger to iconic man-made landmarks, subverting their authority. With caustic humour and repetition, the artist delivers a firm expression of the his belief in the necessity for global reform of human rights. Born and raised in Communist China, Ai emigrated to New York in 1981. Although he returned to live in China, and was a collaborator on the stadium architecture for the Beijing Olympics, he became an outspoken critic of the regime, resulting in surveillance, imprisonment, passport confiscation and studio destruction. A worldwide public petition and actions by prestigious art museums secured Ai's release from prison, and he recently, after destruction of another studio, relocated to Berlin. He remains an outspoken political activist, in word, deeds and artworks.
