Meet Botticelli Sandro Botticelli (c.1445-1510) is best known for mythological masterpieces Primavera (c.1482) and The Birth of Venus (c.1485), both in Florence's Uffizi Gallery. During his prolific career he also created a host of religious works; altarpieces, frescoes for the newly completed Sistine Chapel; portraits of Medici noblemen, and intimate likenesses of the greatest Italian beauty of his time, Simonetta Vespucci. His paintings embody the linear grace of the Early Renaissance period and his refined brushwork complemented his early adoption of tempera grassa, a medium that was new to Italy, in which oil was added to egg tempera to make the paint more transparent, smoother to manipulate, and longer-lasting.
