Meet Pieter Bruegel the Elder Born to a Flemish family of artists working across four generations in 16th-17th centuries, Pieter Bruegel (c.1525-1569) was both a painter and printmaker whose works brought a humanising quality to his busy tableaus. His formative influence on Dutch Golden Age painting is particularly visible in his subject matter, having eschewed the traditional choice of religious or historical narratives reserved for such expansive compositions, he depicted landscapes and peasant scenes instead. His description of contemporaneous commoner activities drew attention to the lot of the working man and woman, the pleasures of the mundane and the virtues of the ordinary.
