Meet Philip Guston Guston's pioneering work across a number of artistic modes, and refusal to shy away from troubling subject matter, has made him one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Like many significant artists in the USA, his career began as a muralist under Franklin Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration programme, engaging artists across the nation in a federally-led programme of support. Guston later became a founding member of the New York School, before abandoning abstraction in favour of a singular style of neo-expressionism. His paintings, often uncompromising depictions of antisemitism, facism, and racism that registered the casual banality of evil, remain an influential, and in recent years controversial, force in contemporary art.
